Can I do this in one day?

I%26#39;m working on an intinerary for our South Dakota trip July 4-10. We%26#39;re staying in Custer. Cast is me, husband and 8 year old daughter.

We%26#39;re thinking about driving to Devils Tower one day-would this work?

**Drive to Devils Tower (I%26#39;m guessing we would be there a couple hours?)

**Drive through Spearfish Canyon (plan on stopping to walk a few trails, take pictures, etc.)

**Drive to Deadwood (pan for gold, see the show, etc.)

**Drive back to Custer

Am I trying to do too much in one day? I fully understand this is a long day, but will it work? Thanks!

That isn%26#39;t too bad. Get started right away in the morning and you%26#39;ll have time. By the Deadwood show, I assume you mean the shootout in the street. Check out the time of your Deadwood shootout/show in advance and keep an idea of when you need to be there.

The trial of Jack McCall is at 8pm with the shootout right after on Main St.

I think we should make it.

Does two hours sound about right for Devils Tower?

Does two hours sound about right for driving through Spearfish Canyon with a few stops to hiking/pictures?

No, you can see Devil%26#39;s Tower in a couple of hours; depends on how long it takes you to do the hike and if you stop at Prairie Dog Village(?) on the way in or out. It will probably take at least an hour to get to Devils Tower from Custer (I haven%26#39;t gone from Custer before). As stated earlier, go early and maybe take the freeway part way to save time. I%26#39;m sure someone can tell you the nicest, quickest way to get there. Spearfish Canyon is beautiful and really won%26#39;t take long (19 miles), even if you pull over for a bit at scenic stops (Bridal Veil Falls, Savoy). When you get to Cheyenne Crossing, it%26#39;s a relatively short drive into Deadwood through Lead (maybe 15 miles).

According to Mapquest, Devil%26#39;s Tower is about 2.5 horus from Custer. To me, this would be a nice daytrip. Two hours is really about right to see the tower. I am sure your daughter will love the prairie dog town mentioned.

You can hit Deadwood and Spearfish Canyon on the way back home. You will probably only need about an hour in Spearfish unless you are big hikers.

Enjoy your trip.

Thanks for your replies everyone! Looks like we%26#39;ll stick with this on our itinerary.
