Hello everybody,
my family and I are going to travel through the US in our summer vacation. Since I am interested in the siouan culture and language, we are thinking of visiting the pine ridge or any other Lakota reservation. Can anybody give me some information what you can do there; visiting museums, historic places... I even read that you can make your own drums and pipes in a workshop there.
Thank you very much for your help
Visiting Lakota (Sioux)Many incredible places to see in the area.
A link to a page with info and more links: travelsd.com/ourhistory/鈥ndex.asp
Also a visit to Bighorn Battlefield in MT.
Visiting Lakota (Sioux)I grew up in the town of Lakota, ND.
Spirit Lake reservation near Devil%26#39;s Lake, ND is one (Ft. Totten). It has one of the oldest preserved ';settlements'; on an Indian reservation. Interesting in its own right, but not traditional Native American. More like what it was like when the settlers came in, has one of the oldest schools, etc.
Wall, South Dakota has the Wounded Knee Musuem highlighting the history and plight of Lakota people to the Plains areas.
Here is a link to further give an idea of what is present: www.pineridgechamber.com/chamber/page7.html
It has been my experience the Lakota people are a very proud people and are not there to do anyone like myself any favors.....they are very much interested in sharing their view to their lives and nation.
Wounded Knee.
