We are coming from spending the night in Sioux Falls. We will stop at Corn Palace, then onto either Wall Drug or Badlands NP. After spending one night in Badlands NP we are going to Kestone for two nights. Would it be better to drive on pass the first exit for Badlands, go onto Wall ,visit there, then go onto Badlands? Also we we were told we could go thru Custer State Park after leaving Badlands and going to Keystone. Can someone let me know which would be better? With gas prices the way they are, we dont want to be backtracking.
Thanks
need help on directions
Many people have posted similar questions. I do know that you can travel from Keystone to Mt. Rushmore, then thru Custer State park and then Crazy Horse. You will make like a big clockwise circle according to the TA posters. We are going for the first time the last of May and I asked a similar question earlier in the year. Good luck with your plans.
need help on directionsI looked back since Jan. and couldnt find anything on coming from the Badlands. Is there another way out of the Badlands that wil ltake us thru Custer State Park prior to Keystone?
Sorry I am not familiar with route coming from the Badlands. TA poster Accomadator is a local that may give you more insight.
Thanks, hopefully that poster will write soon. We are not going until mid July but I%26#39;m trying to get prepared.
I hate to be the one to break the news, but there is a real shortage of roads in that part of South Dakota. The best bet is to exit the Badlands at Wall and follow I-90 to Rapid City.
The person at Badlands told us that we could could take a scenic road over to Custer then onto Keystone after leaving Badlands. I wonder what he was talking about? So then would it be best to just get off the highway at the first Badlands exit, spend the night then drive thru Badlands, stop at Wall drug, drive thru Custer and then onto Keystone??
I%26#39;ve been looking at some maps trying to figure out what this might be. If you%26#39;re staying at Cedar Pass, it%26#39;s about 13 miles shorter to take SD 44 to Rapid City instead of I-90, but slower. The only thing that looks like a scenic route/short cut to Custer involves rather more gravel road driving than I care for. It%26#39;s probably fewer miles but much slower driving and the possibility for getting lost exists. From Cedar Pass go west on SD 44 roughly 35 miles. Turn left onto a gravel road and follow it for, at best guess, 25 miles until you reach SD 40. West on 40, about 7 miles to Hermosa. From there you can take SD40 to Keystone or SD36/US16A to Custer.
You might do best to ask someone working at the Badlands when you get there. :-)
no gravel raods, please. So how would you do the driving around there? Badlands to wall to custer to keystone or wall to badlands to custer to keystone???
Thanks
You might also think about planning your trip so you will be at Wall Drug in time for lunch. I understand they have a great little lunch counter. We will be there in late May so will post my experiences when we return on June 7.
Hmm thats a good idea. WE will be driving from sioux Falls stopping at Mitchell for the Corn Palace and then we can either go to Wall Drug or go on into Badlands NP. HMMM I have no idea which would better to do? Wall drug before or after Badlands. If we do it before then we will be driving thru the Badlands again on the same road to get to the highway. But I guess that would be okay, we would be going a different directions at a different time of day. By going back up to the main hwy, how far is Custer state park?
