I am planning my first trip to Deadwood leaving this Sunday. It was kind of spur of the moment, which I can do easy enough because I am traveling solo.
I plan to drive close to 800 miles from Mlwaukee to Rapid City and have reserved the Microtel in Rapid City for one night.
In the morning I will head to Mt Rushmore and the Norbeck Hwy.
Afternoon I will head to Deadwood. I assume 385 is the best route from Hill City or Keystone as opposed to going back to Rapid City and I-90 correct? If 385 is the best route can someone tell me about how long it will take from Hill City to Deadwood?
I have reserved the Bullock Hotel for 3 nights in Deadwood. The main purpose of my trip is to see the historic sites, so that gives me two full days.
I am not counting the day of arrival because I will spend most of the day in the Black Hills. On my last morning I will leave early for the long ride home.
Are two full days too much for the Deadwood sites even given that it is the main purpose for my trip?
If I have some extra time do you have any ideas for something else I could do nearby? I don%26#39;t want to drive too much on my days in Deadwood as I will have enough windshield time getting to and from.
I plan to spend evenings gambling and drinking like they do in the HBO series.
Two days in Deadwood
385 is the fastest route from Hill City to Deadwood. It will take you less than an hour. If you were to take the Rapid City route you%26#39;re looking at closer to 1.5 hours.
You%26#39;ll have a fun two days in Deadwood. There will be plenty to do--especially if you fill in the blanks with some gambling and booze (you%26#39;ll need to use a lot of foul language while doing so if you%26#39;re going to act out the HBO series). The Bullock is in a good spot as you won%26#39;t have to drive anywhere to get to bars and casinos.
I%26#39;m assuming you%26#39;ve researched the Deadwood highlights--The Adams Museum, The Adams House Museum, the cemetery, etc. I believe the Days of 76 Museum has opened for the summer. Stop in at old the train depot for information. Even if you don%26#39;t need info, it%26#39;s a good stop.
Even though you%26#39;re trying not to drive while in Deadwood--I wouldn%26#39;t miss a drive through Spearfish Canyon. It will take you about an hour or a little more round trip from Deadwood. Make a loop of it. Try a stop at the Spearfish Canyon Lodge/Latchstring Inn and make the short walk to Spearfish Falls. You might also take a short detour to Roughlock Falls.
Two days in Deadwood
Thank you so much.
Yes, I have researched the main Deadwood sites and I figured I should be able to fill in any info when I get to town. I had not read about the train depot for tourist info, so thanks for that information.
I will also look into Spearfish Canyon.
ps. I don%26#39;t really drink or gamble that much, but I hope to have great fun wandering thru town.
It sounds like there are several tour companies in Deadwood. Do you have a receommendation for a particular company or guide for a historic tour of Deadwood?
I would spend more time up in the Black Hills.
One day is enough time especially if you don%26#39;t drink and gamble.Deadwood nothing like the show on HBO.
By the way the original town of Deadwood burned down so not original buildings.Lots of concrete here,IMO does not resemble a Western (cowboy) town like Tombstone.Visit the cemetery where Wild Bill and Calamity Jane, lay buried side by side also take a ride up to Devils Tower, and Spearfish Canyon.
You have alot of time on your hands here......
in Deadwood, but maybe you will like it..
