We are making the trip from Iowa to the Black Hills in July. We would like to stop in DeSmet for an afternoon and spend the night either on the way or on the way back home. If we do it on the way home (my preference) we will be there on one of the nights that the pageant is performed. I%26#39;m trying to decide if this would be a positive or negative. On the one hand, we would have an opportunity to see the pageant, on the other hand, I%26#39;m wondering if it wouldn%26#39;t just be better to be there on a non-pageant day to have less crowds (tends to make it less enjoyable for everyone). Opinions anyone?
Should we visit during pageant time?
We were there on a pageant weekend 2 years ago. Because it was our arrival day (we had woken up at 3:00 in the morning to get to the airport), we were just too exhausted to actually go to the pageant. I can tell you, though, that the town itself was NOT overly crowded. If you want to do the pageant, don%26#39;t even worry about the crowds. The only possible downside might be that the lodging may be a little bit more money, because they know they can charge more on those weekends.
