I am doing some last minute trip planning and would like suggestions for a hearty breakfast in Rapid City. I am staying at the Microtel at I-90 and Lacrosse St. I would prefer a local place to a chain if anyone knows of a good one.
I will be heading to Mt Rushmore and Norbeck Hwy for the day, so I think a little more morning nourishment is in order than I am likely to find at the Microtel%26#39;s continental breakfast.
I have a guide book that lists a couple of bagel restaurants. I was thinking of stopping at one to get some stuff to go for a picnic lunch, but unless I find a better option I may end up eating breakfast at B %26amp; L or Black Hills bagels too.
Thanks in advance. More questions will be coming.
Breakfast in Rapid City
The dining room at Mt. Rushmore is great for breakfast and lunch. If you are going to Custer State park out the Norbeck scenic highway grap a picnic lunch or eat at the State Game Lodge at Custer state park. They have a buffet with soups, salads, etc. at lunch.

Try The Colonial House Restraunt at 2501 Mt Rushmore Road or Tally%26#39;s, Across the Street from the Hotel Alex Johnson downtown.
Thank you both. I will probably want to eat before I hit the road, but it%26#39;s good to know decent food is available at Mt. Rushmore if I decide to wait.
Where is the Lodge in Custer State Park? I plan to drive west from Mt Rushmore, south and then east on Needles Hwy back to the Iron Mountain Rd and Mt Rushmore. I read a TA post from Accommodator indicating that%26#39;s the best route.
From there I plan to drive to Deadwood. I assume 385 is the best route. I will be staying the next 3 nights in Deadwood, which is the main purpose of my trip, the historical sites in Deadwood. Okay, so I like casinos too, but really the main purpose is the historical sites.
The State Game Lodge is near the Norbeck visitors center along US hwy 16 A
Thanks.
I second coldatmtrushmore%26#39;s suggestions of The Colonial House and Tally%26#39;s--I%26#39;d choose the Colonial House if I had to pick just one.
Both Black Hills Bagels and B%26amp;L Bagels are great bagel places but I wouldn%26#39;t say they have ';hearty'; breakfasts.
I wouldn%26#39;t exactly say the food at Mount Rushmore is ';good';--';good enough'; is more like it.
I%26#39;ve never been to Mt. Rushmore dining hall- we will be there on May 27 and 28 but my parents and sisters have and they have traveled all over the US like us. They say that the food is ';good'; compared to some of the other dining halls in National parks across the country. I prefer local restaurants because you can get some really great breakfasts. We were in West Yellowstone, MT last year and ate at the Running Bear and had the best pancakes in the world. We live in the Atlanta area and have world class restaurants and are accustomed to getting good food. Enjoy your trip. Thanks Accomodator and others for posting the local info.
Thank you for your additional suggestions. I thought the bagels and fixuns might make a better snack as I drive thru the day.
If the weather cooperates I would much rather sit out in a park to eat. Of course they got snow yesterday not very north of here, so I know anything is possible this time of year as far as the weather goes. I will keep my eye on the forecast.
I like to keep plans flexible, but it sounds like the Colonial House is a winner.
Reporting back with a kind of a long story, but here goes.
I fell alseep early after my long, long drive, so as a result I woke up early in the morning. I decided to go for breakfast and return to the hotel to freshen up before checking out.
I drove to the Colonial House at about 6:30 and found it does not open until 7:00. On the way back to the hotel I saw a sign for the Morningside Cafe and decided to try it out.
The Morningside was very good and reasonably priced. It is located at 710 N La Crosse Street, in a strip mall behind the La Crosse street casino.
I would recommend it for breakfast and they also serve lunch.
