We%26#39;ll be in Keystone for 3 days late next week and want to do a little cave exploring. Unfortunately, my wife who loves caves, is recovering from a recently broken ankle. She can walk on a relatively flat surface but has a hard time with lots of steps. We also have 3 kids- 3, 5 and 13. I have read many posts about the cave options and want to find the most interesting tour, but also one that can fit her abilities. I see the Jewel Cave Discovery Talk takes you to one room and takes 20 minutes. Crystal Cave advertises as the least strenuous cave tour and lasts 40 minutes. What is the best of these two options, or does anyone have another suggestions?
Thanks!
Jewel Cave Discovery Talk versus Crystal CaveWow. This is really a bummer for your wife. I have been to Jewel Cave but not Crystal. As you have read, Crystal Cave claims to be the least strenuous tour in the Black Hills, but when I went to nps.gov and looked at the Jewel Cave Discovery Tour, and I see it has only 15 steps and is listed as handicap accessible. You travel down to the cave by elevator and exit the same way according to the website. She could probably handle it with all this in mind. Nowhere could I find the number of steps at Crystal. I think I would call Crystal Cave and check on accessibility for your wife.
I am really partial to Jewel Cave. I think the rangers do such an excellent job at leading the tours, and the formations are beautiful.
Whatever you decide, I hope you have a wonderful time!
Jewel Cave Discovery Talk versus Crystal CaveThank you Sirtravelplanner. If my wife could negotiate the 700+ steps in Jewel we%26#39;d definitely go. I may have to give Crystal a call to get more info. I was hoping someone would have experience with both.
