We are interested in visiting Mt Rushmore %26amp; vicinity for several days in June. We are traveling with one or two kids, leaving from Hartford CT, and will stay in Keystone. Does anyone have any advice on getting to the area? The flights to Rapid City take all day, with multiple changes, and are quite expensive. Would it make sense to fly to Denver or Billings, and then drive? Thanks for your suggestions!
getting to South Dakota
Denver is a popular alternative to Rapid City. It takes 6-7 hours of driving to get from Denver to the Black Hills. There isn%26#39;t a whole to see on the drive. When it comes down to it, this adds about two days to your vacation. You%26#39;ll have to compare prices for flights, added nights of lodging, rental cars and now more than ever, gas.
You probably won%26#39;t find any better connections or pricing than Rapid City when flying into Billings from the east coast. Billings is about a five hour drive. Sioux Falls is also five hours away but like Billings, you%26#39;re probably not going to save much.
Another alternative is Omaha. It%26#39;s about 8 hours away and is known for cheap fairs.
You might try a commute on your end of the trip instead. I did a quick check on pricing and flying from New York is about $340/ticket compared to $605/ticket out of Hartford.
getting to South Dakota
We are coming to Mt. Rushmore, then on to Cody, YNP and GT in early June. We fly out of Atlanta and I found great rates flying into Denver. I also found very resonable rental car rates. We are flying in early one morning and driving the 6-7 hours to Keystone the same day. The gas prices haven%26#39;t changed my mind about how we are getting there because I made all my reservations in Jan. and Feb. Where are you staying in Keystone? We are staying at the K Bar S Lodge.
Be prepared for a boring drive from Denver to Keystone.Came this way but opposite direction,Hill City to Rocky Mountain National Park. The stretch of I25 in Wyoming is as desolate as can be.Worse than the stetch of I90 (Gillette to Sheridan) when going to Yellowstone.Hard to stay awake so be careful.
