Mount Rushmore???

My family wants to drive to Mt. Rushmore and then on to West Yellowstone/National Park. We have been to West Yellowstone/National Park many times, it is our favorite place to go. My question is - is Mt. Rushmore a one day thing? Should we plan to get there, spend the night somewhere, look at the carvings, spend the night again or head west towards Yellowstone? According to what I read, Keystone is the place to stay, any hotel reccomendations? Or other towns. Any help will be greatly appreciated. God Bless You All! Sherrill

Mount Rushmore???

If the only thing you want to see in South Dakota%26#39;s Black Hills is Mt. Rushmore, I%26#39;d say skip it. However there is much more to the Black Hills than that. The Mammoth Site in Hot Springs is awesome! Wind Cave and Jewel Cave are National Parks or Monuments. Needles highway is a fun drive, far different from Texas. Devils Tower is not far away either nor is the Badlands National Park. If you spent a week in Black Hills you wouldn%26#39;t see it all.

Mount Rushmore???

We are going on May 27. We are flying into Denver and driving to Keystone (staying at K Bar S Lodge). The next day we are going to Mt. Rushmore, Custer State Park, Crazy Horse and then back to the night lighting ceremony for Mt. Rushmore (a must see). The next day we are going to Deadwood, Spearfish Canyon, and Devil%26#39;s Tower before heading to Cody, YNP, GT and Jackson Hole. We were in YNP and GT last year but stayed in West Yellowstone. We are staying in Gardiner, Cody and Jackson Hole this year. A stop in Cody (staying at Cody Cowboy Village) is great. The rodeo and museums are one of a kind. Have a great trip and let us know if you need more info.

I would spend a min of 2 night in the Black Hills

Mt Rushmore during day and evening lighting ceremony

Custer State Park need at least 4 hrs here

View of Crazy Horse

Drive the Needles and Iron Mountain Rd.

Visit Gutzon Borglum Museum in Keystone

A short visit to Deadwood and Devils Tower on way to Yellowstone

We always stay in Hill City and dine at the Alpine Inn.This duo can%26#39;t be beat.

We will be here again Sep 4-6 as part of our 6 week tour of the Magical West.

How much time do you have for your vacation? As you can see, there%26#39;s a lot of us Black Hills fans out there! You really can spend a week and not see everything. The other posters have highlighted some of the must sees.

I agree with others that I would not come to the Black Hills just to see Rushmore and then leave. There%26#39;s just too much to see and do. Two-three nights would really be the bare minimum to stay here.

If you get a moment, order a travel guide from travelsd.com. It will give you a good idea what the area has to offer. Then you can make a decision on how long to stay.

As for touring Rushmore, a 1/2 day daytime visit will suffice, along with a visit to the lighting ceremony at night.

Keystone is a central location and convenient to many attractions including Rushmore. We stayed at the Roosevelt Inn in Keystone. I have a review on this site; feel free to check it out.

People do Black Hills/Yellowstone vacations all the time, but they usually have around 2 weeks for touring. Enjoy the planning, and come back if you have more questions.

I started my planning with a day or so visit expanded it to three and will actually be staying a week and I know I only touched the surface of what this little corner of the world can offer. I%26#39;ve not been yet as I leave next week yet I know I will be back for another visit to catch the things I will have missed. Asking for the South Dakota Travel guide is a good suggestion. There is also a guide for the Black Hills that is worth requesting as well it%26#39;s called the Southern Hills Source. I am sorry I don%26#39;t remember how I got my copy but I did order it online. BTW I chose Custer as my base, I wanted something in the middle of the places I was visiting this trip. I%26#39;ll write a review on my return.

Have a great trip.
