My family (kids ages 5, 13 and 16) are traveling to the Black Hills (Keystone, Custer, Hill City, Hot Springs, Badlands) for a week and wondered--what do we do if it%26#39;s raining? so many of the things we plan on seeing/doing require good weather. . . hiking/Mt Rushmore/Custer STate Park/BAdlands National Park/WIld Horse Sanctuary/ Bear Country USA etc. Are there places of interest if we are faced with terrible weather for a day?
We are going at the end of May.
what to do if it's raining?
We encountered a few rainy days on our trip to SD. Cave tours are great activities during inclement weather. Wind %26amp; Jewel Caves are really the best, but there are also some privately owned ones as well.
Here are some other rainy day activities:
Putz %26amp; Glo Mini Golf near Rapid City (indoor)
Mammoth Site in Hot Springs
Presidential Wax Museum in Keystone
Gutzon Borglum Historical Center in Keystone
Big Thunder Gold Mine in Keystone
Adams House/ Museum in Deadwood
Some of the Reptile Gardens would be do-able in inclement weather
Shops in Keystone
1880 Train-Hill City-Keystone
Shops in Hill City
Everything Prehistoric in Hill City
Hope this helps.
what to do if it's raining?
Didn%26#39;t know Putz N Glo was indoors--great idea!
Also love the Gold Mine and Cave ideas.
thank you, that helps!
Here%26#39;s hoping it%26#39;s sunny though!
You will have a wonderful time rain or shine, believe me! We had a couple of downpour days when we visited 2 years ago. The cave tours can really get you through. Wind %26amp; Jewel are close enough to do in one day, imo. If you can get advance reservations, it will help, especially at Jewel Cave. Jewel has no surface activities other than the visitor%26#39;s center. The Junior Ranger program will keep the younger set entertained here. Wind Cave is a national park and has a drive through area where you can see wildlife. I remember seeing bison %26amp; prairie dogs here.
Good luck with the weather. It seems like it%26#39;s been an upredictable spring. Be sure to post a trip report so we can hear all about your travels.
We faced exactly this problem on our trip this past weekend. As slrtravelplanner said, there are lots of indoor things to do. On Friday, we went to the Mammoth Site in Hot Springs, followed by Evans Plunge - the biggest hit of the trip for our kids. I would not recommend driving Custer Park or trying to see Rushmore or Crazy Horse on a rainy day because even if its not actually raining, they are at high enough elevation to be fogged in.
