I%26#39;m still trying to decide between Jewel and Wind. I%26#39;ve been to Merrimac near St. Louis and while some of it was impressive, some of it was a bit %26#39;tacky%26#39; I felt with the artifical lighting. Are the formations in Jewel cave lit up with artifical colours?
Jewel Cave - colours artificial or real?
I don%26#39;t recall any artifical colors in either cave. I have toured caves that are known as ';show caves'; (privately owned) and those that are operated by nps. I found the ones operated by nps to be better, as they keep the caves in their more natural states.
I don%26#39;t think you will find either cave tacky. I have a pretty detailed comparison of the two caves in a post from about a year ago. Accomodator just referenced the post to another individual today. If you haven%26#39;t seen it, check it out. It might help you decide between the two. As I have said many times, you can%26#39;t go wrong with either cave, and if you have time, definitely do both. They are very worthwhile.
Enjoy your trip.

I can%26#39;t recall colored lights in either cave.
No colored lights in Jewel or Wind Cave to make it look different. There are lights on certain areas, but they are natural look.
We enjoyed the Scenic Tour at Jewel Cave more than the Natural Entrance Tour at Wind Cave. Next time we go to Wind Cave will do the Fairgrounds Tour.
