Black Hills Dining Recommendations

We%26#39;ll be spending about 8 days in the Black Hills area: Rushmore, Custer State Park, Hot Springs, Deadwood, Badlands, Devil%26#39;s Tower.

We%26#39;d like relatively quick lunches but nicer dinners. We have two boys ages 8 and 11 who appreciate a variety of food. We%26#39;re not looking for fine dining though - don%26#39;t want to get dressed up beyond nice casual.

Also, where would be a good place to pick up sandwiches/sub for the Badlands. I am assuming there isn%26#39;t much right around there a I%26#39;d rather not take the time to trek out for lunch while we are doing our %26#39;loop%26#39; tour. Any Jimmy Johns in the area? We%26#39;ll be leaving from Rapid City and driving east along I-90 to get to BNP.

Black Hills Dining Recommendations

If you like filet, I definitely recommend the Alpine Inn in Hill City for dinner. They only serve filet at dinner, but I do think they have a children%26#39;s menu. You can always call in advance to be sure.

We did the lunch there and found everything very nice quality. For lunch, they serve German food, and their desserts are to die for.

If you go for dinner, arrive early. They fill up fast and don%26#39;t take reservations. I believe they open around 5 for dinner.

We also enjoyed the Blue Bell Game Lodge...good food and excellent service. We tried our first bison here.

I have also seen posts on here that the State Game Lodge has a buffet, but I think it%26#39;s only at lunch. I did not go there, but if it%26#39;s anything like the Blue Bell, I%26#39;m sure it%26#39;s very good.

For super casual dining, you always have the Golden Corral at the LaCrosse St Exit off I90 in Rapid City, right in front of the Super Walmart. Golden Corrall is a chain that serves buffet style. Very basic food but extremely kid friendly.

The locals have good recommendations on dining in Rapid City, which is probably more diverse. I%26#39;m sure you will get more suggestions.

Sorry I can%26#39;t help you on the sandwich stop. I am sure there is somewhere in Rapid where you could stop.

Have a good trip.

Black Hills Dining Recommendations

Cedar Pass Lodge serves food in the Badlands.

Jimmy Johns is at 615 Mountain View (Main St intersection) in the Baken Park Complex, south side of the gas station.

Schotsky%26#39;s %26amp; Philly Ted%26#39;s are across from Walmart on Lacrosse.

Quiznos on Mt. Rushmore Rd %26amp; in the food court of the mall.

3 Subway sandwich places in Rapid, one in Hill City.

The only place I%26#39;ve ever had a really bad meal (actually 3 of us had 3 different bad meals) was the Steak n Ribs Place in Custer, nice building, Starbucks coffee, but don%26#39;t eat there.

Thanks for all the suggestions and specific locations for all the sandwich places!

I think we might try the buffet at the State Lodges but in general, we prefer non-buffet. I know it%26#39;s convenient with kids but we end up over-eating!

First, nice casual dress is appropriate for all, or almost all dining establishments in the Hills area. You%26#39;d have to really go out of your way to find really nice formal places where you wouldn%26#39;t feel comfortable being dressed casual.

Some different restaurants to try within Rapid City area that are family friendly and not too $$ are: Firehouse Brewing (Main St), Colonial House (Mt Rushmore Rd), Milstone(like a Perkins but better, are they a chain?) (Lacrosse, near Walmart and close to I-90), Pirates Table - if you want something a little nicer, dinner only I believe but still okay for family and casual attire, good prime rib, steaks and seafood, nice atmosphere and good service (Sturgis Rd). Also the Gaslight in Rockerville (off Hwy 16 on the way to Keystone/Mt. Rushmore from RC). We also have all the usual assortment of chain restaurants in the mall/I-90 vacinity.

As for sub shops, all the suggestions mentioned by an earlier poster but I would also add Pauly%26#39;s Subs - IMO better than Subway but that%26#39;s personal preference. They also have pretty good pizzas (E. Omaha St %26amp; St. Patrick St.). I believe there is still a Subway in Wall which might be more convenient for your badlands trip day.

Alpine Inn in Hill City is good food, many people really seem to like it. However, its important to note that they don%26#39;t really have a menu, your options (for dinner anyway) are limited to filet mignon, potato and a wedge of lettuce salad and some desserts. I believe they also offer a veggie alternative. Don%26#39;t get me wrong, food is still good and a neat atmosphere but if you don%26#39;t like filet then its not really worthwhile. Maybe just to stop in and have some of their delish desserts though?

I can no longer recommend the Fireside Inn (new ownership, new prices, new menu - not good, slow service after several tries) and Outback Steakhouse (yeah I know they are a chain but still was one of our faves) not so good anymore - new manager - slooow service.
