My husband, his buddy and I are coming West for Sturgis bike week this year. We are traveling from NY and since our buddy has a real job we have only 2-3 days in the area. We would like some suggestions on what not to miss, restaurants and scenic rides in the Sturgis and Black Hills area. The most affordable hotel we found and reserved is the Days Inn in Murdo so that is our beginning and end for each day. Our plan is to take a ride thru Sturgis but we really want to see Rushmore and such. Also give me an idea of what the high and low temps can be so I can pack accordingly since I have limited space on the back of the bike.
would like any good suggestions
Murdo is 160 miles from Sturgis so you%26#39;ve got quite a ride each morning and evening.
Ride through the Badlands on one of your commutes.
Take a ride through Spearfish Canyon and Deadwood.
In the Mount Rushmore area, take a loop of Mt. Rushmore/SD240 west/Sylvan Lake/Needles Highway/Playhouse Road/Iron Mountain Road/Mt. Rushmore.
About any road up in the Black Hills is a fun ride.
Temp-wise: look for it be hot during the day (90s), and relatively cool at night (60s on the prairie, 50s in the Black Hills). Jackets are usually needed for night riding. Rain gear. Lots of sun block.
would like any good suggestions
Murdo is going to be a 2 1/2 to 3 hour communte to either Sturgis or Mt. Rushmore. The 80 miles on I90 between Wall %26amp; Murdo is mostly uninhabited, treeless rolling hills, so I would second Accomodator%26#39;s recommendation to make at least one of those daylight commutes through the Badlands.
Thanks for the suggestions! We figured it would be quite a ride, but that is what we are in it for ...the ride! Any thing alse you can tell me would be greatly appreciated.
The riding on I-90 from isn%26#39;t exactly a fun ride. It%26#39;s not anything tough--just a long, boring sit. Other than your one trip through the Badlands, it%26#39;s not too exciting.
The one Black Hills town that isn%26#39;t booked a year in advance is Hot Springs. It%26#39;s about an hour closer to Sturgis than Murdo--with a much more enjoyable ride through the Black Hills instead of the interstate across the prairie. It will also position you quite a bit better for Mt. Rushmore and other Black Hills stops you may want to make.
....Make sure you spend a little time in Wall, South Dakota! Why? Because where else are you going to go? See the past year for what Wall, SD is about ---- Just because, you stopped there. There wil be other riders parked in the Town Main STreet....
roadkinggirl, You are probably already tired of hearing this, but I drove back %26amp; forth on the Rapid City- Murdo stretch of the interstate again this week. I tried to see the area as if I had never seen it before. It is all grasslands. I told my husband about your plans, his comment is that you will hate driving that stretch than once. Accomodater is right. Hot Springs would be a much better base for scenery and fun rides.
Thanks to everyone! we took accomodators advice and booked a room in Hot Springs. The only trouble we are having now is trying to cancel the room in Murdo, they dont want to let us do it and my credit card has already been charged. I might just take a loss on it and forget about it. I am really looking forward to this because I have never been any farther west than PA.
If you do have to pay for the Murdo room, use it for the first and last night on your trip to and from the Black Hills. You%26#39;ll be able to minimize your losses that way.
With only 2 or 3 days in the area, you are going to be limited. From Hot Springs, be sure to do Custer State Park wildlife loop and from there you can do Iron Mountain Rd/Rushmore and Needles Highway. There is a great guide book (sturgisrallyguidebook.com) that is exactly what you are looking for. It has 5 one day loops of riding with restaurants and favorite dishes as well as best saloons and entertainment for each of the loops. It takes you to every major attraction in the Black Hills (Mt. Rushmore, Devil%26#39;s Tower, Spearfish Canyon, Badlands, etc. Be sure to check the 10 day forecast on weather.com before you leave home. Sometimes it can be in the 50%26#39;s and 60%26#39;s all day and sometimes it is 50 in the am and 105 in the pm. Be sure to try to ride Spearfish Canyon as it is one of the top rides in the US. Good luck.
also I-90 is a grooved highway and speed limit is around 75 mph the grooves are vertical can be a bit scary for the first time It was for us when we went in 2005
