My husband and I are looking for lodging in the Spearfish area for one night in June. I have found Spearfish lodge ($150) and Orchard Creek Cottages ($75).
Is Spearfish Canyon Lodge worth the extra?
I have found a couple of positive comments about Orchard Creek Lodge. Do any of you have any comments or other information about it?
What about great places to eat in the Spearfish/Lead/Deadwood area?
Thanks
Orchard Creek Cottages
At the end of our drive on Spearfish Canyon Road we ran across a roadside bar and grill in Lead called Lewie%26#39;s Saloon and Eatery. We stopped. The atmostphere was nice and relaxing. Though we only had drinks and appertizers, we thought it would be nice to go back here but we never made it back.
We spent lots of time in Deadwood. There are plenty decent places to eat, but the restaurants mostly close down early.
The manager at the Orchard Creek Cottages recommended eating places in town. I can%26#39;t remember the name, but it was very popular and the atmostphere nice.
Orchard Creek Cottages
Among other things, location is a primary difference with Spearfish Canyon Lodge and Orchard Creek Lodge. Spearfish Canyon Lodge is in the middle of Spearfish Canyon which is a beautiful setting. The Latchstring Inn restaurant is there, but other than that it%26#39;s a good 20-30 mintues to any of the conveniences of Spearfish, Lead or Deadwood. Orchard Creek Lodge is right in town in Spearfish which is a town of about 10,000. If you%26#39;re looking for a mountain setting, go with Spearfish Canyon. If you%26#39;re looking to be in town, got with Orchard Creek.
Good Spearfish dining: Roma%26#39;s, Club Room, The Stadium (sports bar) and Guadalajara%26#39;s (Mexican).
Deadwood: Deadwood Social Club, Deadwood Thymes Cafe...or pick about any casino for a burger and fries type meal.
Lead: Stampmill.
For a hole-in-the-wall type place that has great burgers, try The Sugar Shack about 10 miles south of Deadwood on US 385.
Let me add another favorite for dining. The Spearfish Chophouse is great. Just about anything on the menu will be wonderful and reasonably priced. It is casual dining (enjoy peanuts and throw the shells on the floor), with a great staff and the best beef around. It is located about 1/4 mile up Spearfish Canyon (from Spearfish).
We stayed at the Lodge and we enjoyed our stay there. Quiet, serene, with beautiful grounds. I, for one, however, would skip the restaurant and go into Spearfish and eat at any of the restaurants the other posters have suggested. They were quite unfriendly at the LatchString-we went with the intention of eating lunch-it was around 3:45 PM; the host asked us to wait a few minutes, (we were the only ones there), and so we walked around the little museum (if it%26#39;s still there, I have no idea), the hallway, and outside. Then, we were seated, and given dinner menus. WE were not prepared for those dinner prices, and we stayed because we were given the lunch menu upon our arrival. We fidgeted around, then finally asked to see their lunch menu again. They told us we couldn%26#39;t be served lunch, it was too late. They would not tell us ';when'; lunch had been closed down. I told them outright we couldn%26#39;t afford the dinner entrees, and would love to stay if they would provide us with the lunch menu, as we had been given upon our arrival. They told us no. So, we said we%26#39;d have to leave; then someone came out and told us they%26#39;d fix us anything we wanted; but we couldn%26#39;t see the lunch menu...so how were we supposed to order something? No answer given. It was very, very weird. I thought they would stick us with dinner prices upon our bill being delivered. I didn%26#39;t trust them for nothing. So, we all got up and left. We went into town and had a wonderful dinner-somewhere-lol. When we returned to the lodge, there was all of 5 cars outside the LatchString-5, on a Friday night. We enjoyed sitting outside on the lodge%26#39;s patio, and watching no further business come to the restaurant. This had to have been the strangest restaurant experiences we have ever had.
But we thoroughly enjoyed the Lodge, grounds, little bar, small gift shop and our room, plus the canyon.

I have to throw in the bayleaf cafe in spearfish. It was soooo good for dinner! May not be the best for kids, but it sounds like you are two adults?
ETA: It is actually Bay Leaf (two words) ... i had it as one word above, and would probably screw you up if doing a search.
Yes, the Bay Leaf is very good--I forgot to put it on my list.
Dear CabinCouple,
We just returned from having a family reunion in Spearfish over the 4th. We stayed at Orchard Creek Cottages in Spearfish. I cannot say enough good about them! Clean, cute, comfortable, VERY accommodating %26amp; friendly owners, a big back yard with a creek running in the back. You don%26#39;t feel like you%26#39;re in town whatsoever!!
We ALL loved it there and are planning on returning for our next reunion!
