Public transport in SD

Next May we hope to travel through South Dakota stopping off at places of interest, using trains and buses.

Is this a practical proposition?

We%26#39;ll be coming from Chicago by Amtrak, through North Dakota to South Dakota and finally to Nebraska.

Any help please with things not to be missed, availability of public transport and good places to stay.

Thanks for any ideas.

Not practical, but doable with effort and planning.

In the western portion of the US, there are huge distances between cities, and those cities tend to only have public transportation within the metro area.

Amtrak is wonderful for traveling to the west, just don%26#39;t expect to have bus service everywhere you go! Amtrak goes through northern North Dakota, a long way from Rapid City/Black Hills SD.

Greyhound Bus operates in both ND and SD. Check on their website to see about schedules etc www.greyhound.com

I think you will end up spending much more on trains and buses, than you would be renting a car.

In addition to CasaAzul%26#39;s comments...the scheduling on bus services such Greyhound is awful.

Some people are able to fly into Rapid City on the airlines and use tour companies to see what they want to see. But getting here neither by car nor airplane is pretty tough.

Thanks for your replies.

Car hire in one state %26amp; dropping off in another seems difficult and expensive. It seems we can get a bus from Fargo or Grand Forks to Bismarck and from there to Medora and also to Rapid City.Greyhound go from there to Omaha too.I have infomation about a tour company going from Rapid City to Mount Rushmore etc -Satrom Tours-do you know anything about them please?
