We are coming from Minneapolis and want to stop at the Chamberlain overlook that I have heard is a really nice place for a picnic. But where can I stop near there to pick up sandwiches or burgers to eat? Thanks.
Place to get takeout near Chamberlain Overlook
Before you get to Chamberlain, there is a town called Kimball. There is a large truck stop with a decent restaurant (they do take-out) and also a little ice cream place across the street from the truck stop that makes a decent burger. I don%26#39;t know what is in Chamberlain (you would have to go into Chamberlain and back up to the overlook I believe).

The place at the truck stop in Kimball is called Doo-Wa-Ditty%26#39;s. It%26#39;s pretty good for truck stop food. It%26#39;s a good 15-20 minutes to get to the rest area, though, so I%26#39;m not sure if you%26#39;ll want to order hot food and then bus it to the rest area.
If you get something in Chamberlain you have to go past the rest area and take Exit 263 into Chamberlain. There are a number of fast food places--some right by the interstate, some in the middle of town (about a mile north). Then you go back east a couple of miles on I-90 to take the rest area exit.
Fantastic views from the visitors center (Lewis %26amp; Clark).Great place for a picnic and view unbeatable.
The roving hills in the distance and the Missouri River below.
Also take time to go into visitors center and check out the exhibits of Lewis %26amp; Clark.
We too will be stopping here on Sep4 on our Coast to Coast Panorama...
Thanks so much. I know that there is Al%26#39;s Oasis, but I think I have to go past the rest stop and then go back.
I will be in this area on August 30. I may see that museum and I also saw something about Circle of Teepees at a rest stop in this area as well, but never saw anything more on it. Has anyone ever heard about that? We are going on from here to spend a couple hours in the Badlands.
I know that we are also making a pitstop at the Corn Palace in Mitchell before we get to Chamberlain.
I think the teepee you are talking about is a teepee structure that is at most SD rest areas. It%26#39;s worth a look but it won%26#39;t take more a couple minutes.
Here%26#39;s the SDDOT webpage about the Chamberlain rest area. sddot.com/geninfo_projects_chambrestarea.asp
If you go to Al%26#39;s Oasis it will probably take 10 minutes of backtracking to get back to the rest area. If you decide to eat at Al%26#39;s I%26#39;d stop and view the rest area and then head to Al%26#39;s and eat there.
If you%26#39;re looking to pick up grocery store items for a picnic before you get to the rest area, Mitchell is the best place to do it.
Or else we should stop at Doo-Wa-Ditty, right? Maybe I will do that or see if there is a take out place in Mitchell. Thanks so much for your help.
Another question: Does Al%26#39;s have really good food that it is worth not doing the picnic..or is the truck stop just as good??..or a place in Mitchell?
You probably don%26#39;t want to bring food from Mitchell as it is an hour east of Chamberlain. I would do the picnic area, with the river and hills to enjoy. Chamberlain has grocery stores and cafes for take-out. Al%26#39;s is just one, it has both the cafe and grocery store, plus clothing and tourist souveniers. Also, there is a Pizza Hut.
Is the Pizza Hut in Chamberlain??
