I would like to visit Main Street area in downtown Rapid City on a Friday evening in October when I arrive and browsing around Saturday morning. Is parking going to be a problem? I am tossing around the idea of either getting a hotel in the historic area or just a cheap one closer to 90 and driving back and forth. Your opinions are a great help. Thanks in advance.

Parking--in the evenings and on Saturday morning--is not a problem. You might have to walk a block or so but nothing too far. During a weekday you might have to look around a little bit or use a metered spot. There is a two hour maximum for on-street parking from 7:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
If you stay at a hotel, they will provide parking. The Radisson has on-site parking and I believe the Alex Johnson will give you ramp pass but I%26#39;m not sure.
I%26#39;d recommend staying at the Radisson downtown. It is a good location for visiting the stores and restaurants downtown. At a minimum, check out the presidential statues walk, The Prairie Edge Store and Art Alley. A nice little travel supply store is Roamin%26#39; Around.

Thank you for the information and suggestions Accomodator. I will look into Radison. I was contemplating the Alex Johnson Hotel as I found this in ';Off the Beaten Path'; guidebook for South Dakota.
You can%26#39;t beat the location of either the Alex Johnson or the Radisson. Read the reviews on TripAdvisor and other sources and make a decision.
Nearby hotels include The Holiday Inn and Howard Johnson Express but you%26#39;ll likely drive from these to downtown.
An older motorlodge downtown that is about three blocks from where you%26#39;ll be shopping/eating is the Townhouse Lodge.
A downtown bed and breakfast is @ The Loft--I%26#39;m not sure if they%26#39;re still around as I can%26#39;t find their website anymore. They had a small sign downtown and I can%26#39;t recall if I%26#39;ve seen it lately.
