I 90 stop

Coming from Chicago to Mt Rushmore where should we stop on the I90? Fairmont seems to be about half way andy suggestions for lodging?

I 90 stop

i meant half way to siouz falls where we plan to stop also.!! Any lodgimg suggestions for this as well??

I 90 stop

The only place I would even think of stoping would be in Chamberlain at Cedar Shore, theres not much between Sioux Falls and Rapid City.

And halfway from Chicago to Sioux Falls a better stop might be a slight (8-10 mile) side trip into Rochester. Fairmont is fairly close to Sioux Falls (relative to Chicago) so if going that fair you might as well go all the way...not a difficult distance from Chicago at all. Rochester is home to the world famous Mayo Clinic which is worth seeing and with all the clinic visitors there are lots of lodging options ( http://www.rochesterlodging.com/ then check TA reciews ).

If the question actually was 1/2 way from Sioux Falls to Rushmore than I agree Chamberlain is the best bet. Although again the whole distance is easily doable in a day even with stops for touristing (such as Mitchel Corn Palace). 347 miles to Rapid City and 368 to Rusmore itself. less than six driving hours for either.

If we were to be coming from niagara falls to mt rushmore how many stops would you advise and where?

That is a 1500 mile trip from Niagara to Mt Rushmore. I guess stops would be determined by what you want to see along the way. What are you interested in seeing? Big cities, rural areas, parks, zoos, museums etc..... How much driving per day... 4 hours, 8 hours?

Everyone is so different in their ideas of a good plan..

Here%26#39;s an idea for a visiting route...

1 Depart Niagara Falls. Drive to Detroit via Ontario. I will assume you have already been to Toronto. 5 hours of driving. www.visitdetroit.com

2 Visit Detroit area. See Greenfield Village for Henry Ford history... www.hfmgv.org. Stay in Detroit or drive on to Battle Creek or Kalamazoo MI

3 Drive Michigan to Chicago. 4 hours or so. Stop and visit the lake

4 Visit Chicago. Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium etc..

5 Chicago to Sioux Falls SD is probably a 9 hour drive.

6 Sioux Falls to Black Hills area. 4+ hours

I once moved from Orchard Park, NY (near Buffalo) to Mitchell, SD. In winter with bad weather in a few spots so going was slow. I stopped in Rockford, IL then made it to the new house in Mitchell the next day. A lot depends on the number of drivers (I was alone except for my cat and his feet didn%26#39;t reach the gas pedal) and also how many stops for sightseeing and meals you might make.

As the OP implied from Chicago to Rushmore A good halfway spot would be Sioux Falls. From Buffalo, personally, I prefer to cut across Canada but the toll roads on the south side of Lake Erie are faster and you can pretty easily make it to Chicago in one day - especially with one hour time change in your favor. There are not a lot of compelling sites along there like Niagara Falls so just drive straight through.

Another alternative to Sioux Falls might be Mitchell...a really nice small city with the world famous Corn Palace. About an extra hour west of Sioux Falls. The thing about getting there is it would buy an extra hour the next day (aside from time zome change giving an hour too) to see the Badlands and stop at that world famous tourist trap...Wall Drug in Wall, SD.

CasaAzul...Sioux Falls to Black Hills will definitely be on the plus side of 4 hours....by about 2 more. With 360 or so miles at 70Mph this would be 5.25hrs with no stops. Even at 80Mph it%26#39;s 4.5 again with no stops at all and most gas tanks are sized for 400 miles at a car%26#39;s nominal highway milage. So a gas stop with meal or at least bathroom visit would add a little more time. Not to mention road construction delays. Seems like great swaths of I-90 in SD are always being replaced so there are 20-30 mile stretches of 50Mph max and no passing. For planning purposes 6-7 hours plus stops should be allowed and if faster then that%26#39;s just a bonus.

When we drive out here from Pa. the first night we stay in Joliet Ill,just outside of Chicago. The second night we stay in Mitchell SD which leaves us with about 390 mile to Mt Rushmore.

The lodging and dining in Mitchell pretty good + you get to see the Corn Palace.

The best part is when you leave in the morning and make a stop at the Lewis %26amp; Clark visitors center in Chemberlin.1 hr from Mitchell. The scene atop the hill looking down at the Missouri River and the roving hills of South Dakota one of the best, this is where the West starts....

I would stay in Mitchell......

Since I have not driven that route, was putting in figures from mileage to the Black Hills AREA. As I posted about 4+ hours (notice the plus sign) to the Black Hills AREA. I had mileage at 320 to the Black Hills AREA, which to me is not 6-7 hours unless you are driving at 54 mph. I can do math.

Since you have driven that route, you probably are a better source for exact times. I was just trying to help. Note to self, don%26#39;t help on South Dakota Boards anymore.

I should have added,by staying in Mitchell which is more than half way to Mt Rushmore you will have ample time to visit the Badlands and make a quick stop at Wall Drugs on way to Mt Rushmore.

A real time saver...seeing the Badlands on way to Mt Rushmore..

We also take I35 up to Minn, then I90 to Mitchell

I35 not much traffic compared to latter part of I80 into Sioux City.
