I have read some things aout driving trough tunnels and where pig tail bridges (?) are by Mt Rushmore Hwy 16A to Iron Mtn road. It seems like if you are doing this on the same day as seeing Custer you miss the wildlife loop, would you use this 16A shortcut on a different day? Also if we are staying in Keystone and go to the Mammothe site is it quicker to get back to Keystone by 79 or fine to go back up 385?
driving question
Iron Mountain Road is numbered US16A. Iron Mountain Road has tunnels and pig tail bridges. Whether you drive Iron Mountain Road and the Wildlife Loop is up to you.
To get from Keystone to Hot Springs, I%26#39;d take SD240 west of Keystone through Mount Rushmore and US385 to Hot Springs. You can go to SD79 if you like but SD40 east of Keystone is kind of a slow route. Maybe you could make a loop.
driving question
You can drive all those roads in one day. You could either do a BIG loop or a figure eitht. By doing a figure eight you would include most of the east/west section of US16A as well. The advantage to going north on Iron Mountain Road is that the tunnels frame views of Mt. Rushmore that way.
We easily drove these all in one day. It was about noon when we got on 16A by Rushmore and did the Iron Mt. Rd. Then we ran into Custer State Park at the end and did the loop, came out of the loop and Needles Hwy was just a few miles down the road. We were out of there by around 4:30 p.m. If you go all the way through Needles, right near the end is a Hwy that cuts right down to Custer. We did that and skipped the rest of Needles, which wasn%26#39;t a lot. Or you can finish the route and just take the hwy back down to Custer/Hot Springs.
