Currently we are booked at the Spearfish Canyon Lodge but it does not seem very convenient (on-site restaurant reported as not good so we%26#39;d have to travel 15 miles for food). Am I better off staying in Deadwood (considering the Hampton Inn) - with all the casinos is it kid-friendly? Is this a charming western town or a %26#39;tacky%26#39; western town?
Deadwood with kids? There are kids all over the place. As a casino destination it is pretty tame. It is very touristy but retains some of the old west flavor. Kids seem to enjoy the nightly shootout thing in the street...even if it is extremely hokey (and fairly short). Many of the larger casinos are relatively new construction. They are fairly ';kid friendly'; compared to other places in that kids can watch machines being played if they stay at least 6-10 feet back. Our kids got an eye opener when my wife put $5 in a two coin dollar machine and lost $4 on two spins then I gave her a dollar coin (to play max) and she worked it up to $45. They kept telling her to cash out before she lost it until she finally did. Smart kids.
Unlike other gambling venues where people actually live Deadwood is pretty isolated and this inhibits the ';riff-raff'; element that you might see in a a place like Las Vegas. No bums and panhandlers. So as far as all that goes it is much better with kids.
There are lots of food options all along the main street and some super breakfast deals and buffets at the larger cacino hotels.
