Black Hills trip report - getting there from Ohio

My FIL, MIL, DH, and three kids 12,8, and 5 travelled to the Black Hills and on in a 35%26#39; RV. It took 3 days to get there from Ohio. We stopped in the Amana Colonies in Iowa on our 2nd travel day. We ate at the Ox Yoke off the interstate and enjoyed the breakfast food alot. I got a taste of my dd%26#39;s scrambled eggs and they were some of the best I%26#39;ve ever eaten at a restaurant. The portions were large and my son%26#39;s ham was the largest serving of breakfast ham I%26#39;ve ever seen. We enjoyed the quaint shops and checked out the mill and furniture shop. All of this was very close to the freeway so it was a nice convienent stop.

On our third day of travel we stopped at the I-90 visitor center in Chamberlain. It was another nice stop. My FIL is a big Lewis and Clark fan and he said it was one of his favorite things on the trip. There is a replica of their keelboat and a beautiful view as well. We camped that evening at a KOA in Belvidere and since a the 1880 town was at that exit we visited. I would not recommend the 1880 village unless you had time to spend like we did that evening. I think we would have been better served by getting on to the badlands and spending more time there. The 1880 town had an assortment of buildings that had been moved there. It appeared to me that very little is done to improve them after they are moved there. They are all in various states of disrepair. The displays inside could use rutted out as my MIL said. It seems like if there is anything that could relate to the building it would be placed there. In the barn there were a bunch of saddles, I could easily of been happy to see just a few. Not much was labeled. The display I enjoyed the most were the diplays from the movied Dance with Wolves.

1880 Town a tourist trap.

We too loved the stop at Chamberlin, visiting the exhibit and the awesome view from high above looking down at the Missouri river and in the distance the roving hills of S.D.

A must stop here.....
