I%26#39;m traveling to the Black Hills area in September with my boyfriend and another couple, and need some advise on what gold mine to visit. I%26#39;d love somewhere that has a tour and you can pan for gold, but want a place that%26#39;s more authentic (less touristy). I like the idea of heading to a stream to pan but I know that is not very realistic.
Oh, and we are not traveling with kids, so we don%26#39;t have the need to keep any children happy! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Best authentic gold mine? The Homestake mine in Lead was a working mine until just a few years ago. It was a surface mine with a huge pit and very modern. That%26#39;s one way of looking at authentic. :-)http://www.homestaketour.com/homestake-tour.html
Panning for gold is allowed in the national forest, but you might want to check with the forest service first. fs.fed.us/r2/…gold.shtml
Best authentic gold mine?Like LilND says, the Homestake Mine was ';the'; mine in the area up until a few years ago.
A mine that is still operating is the Wharf mine but I don%26#39;t think you can get a tour.
Since you%26#39;re asking about panning, it sounds like you%26#39;re looking for more of a historic mine that tourists frequent. Try the Big Thunder Gold in Keystone. www.bigthundermine.com/index.php?page=home
Accomodator - do you recommend Big Thunder over Wade%26#39;s for panning? My 7 yo ds really wants to %26#39;mine%26#39; not %26#39;pan%26#39; for gold. Do you think viewing the Homestake mine would satisfy this request?
