All I can say is the trip is worth the stops either in Chicago or MPLS and that is the only way to get to RC due to no direct flight from NY. Also make sure you come when most places are open...many close end of Sept for the season and open again in the spring! The Black Hills are worth the trip! Get to the airport, rent a car when your hear and explore!

Love the Hills

It looks like you%26#39;ve done your research. The only ways to get here are plane, car or bus. An airline connection in Minneapolis, Chicago or Denver certainly beats the bus.

You could fly direct to Denver, Omaha or Minneapolis and then drive the rest of the way but you%26#39;re looking at 7-9 hours each way from those destinations. It may save you money and it%26#39;s a way to avoid a connection but it essentially adds two days to your trip.

thank you so much , for the info , ill explain it to my wife , i should have said that i am planning to go in MAY,09 IS THAT A GOOD TIME TO GO ?

Breadman - May is a nice time to visit but you may want to push it towards the end of May as some establishments won%26#39;t open for the season again until Memorial Day. Plus the first week of May we can still see the odd spring blizzard.

did you check with Amtrak train vacation packages? they have different routes than the regular scheduled runs. I believe they are listed under Scenic Tours, or vacation packages. They have vacation packages that include meals on the train, hotel rooms in the cities they stop at and I believe they have a package to Mt Rushmore and the Black Hills. The only caveat is: you need to find your own transportation home from the vacation destination, either through them, airlines or rental cars. The price of this may be a little hire than you were planning on, but since you have almost a year to save for it, and your wife won%26#39;t fly and you don%26#39;t feel you can do all the driving, this might be the perfect way for you.

Oops! Sorry about the typo in my last post, should have read: '; The price of this may be a little higher';

Were it me I think I would opt for teh cheapest airfare I could get to Denver and drive from there. It is an easy one day drive to the Black Hills and very scenic. I too am a solo driver and Denver to Custer, SD would be a leasurely drive even with stops along the way.

In May it will also be the ';greenest'; of the year especially in the National Grasslands areas near Lusk, WY. Great chance to see real working cowboys moving herds around. I agree...late May is best. In June 2007 we drove from Hot Springs, SD to Cheyenne, WY in a raging wind/rain storm that then turned to whiteout blizzard conditions between there and Laramie. Then the sun came out and 6 inches of snow disappeared in an hour. The later the better.

There should be tons of antelope to see on the way (locally called ';speed goats';) but in May probably too early for seeing babies. Possible young wildlife in Custer State Park in the Black Hills. If you don%26#39;t mind repeatedly loading and unloading a car 6-7 days would make for a good circle trip through the hills, around Devils Tower, Deadwood, Rapid City and the Badlands then back to Denver. Lots of really short driving days and then local touristing.

Memphisbelle: can you provide a link to the Amtrak vacation package you mention? The nearest Amtrak stop is hundreds of miles away so I%26#39;m curious about how the package would work.

Accommodator:

You can go to : www.amtrak.com, find the ';hot deals'; tab at the top of the page and go from there to Amtrak Vacations, or just go to: www.amtrakvacations.com.

Have been out of town for a few days, sorry I didn%26#39;t respond sooner to you.

I must not be looking hard enough because I can%26#39;t find anything about a Mount Rushmore or South Dakota at either of those links.

I did find this at another website--I believe it%26#39;s what we%26#39;re talking about.

vacationsbyrail.com/usa/…index.html

It looks like it%26#39;s a train/bus package.
