Deadwood in febuary

Hi there my wife and i and another couple were thinking about coming up there the first week in febuary too do some snowmobiling, and i just have a few questions. First qustion is hotels, we are looking for some place nice with a good bar and nightlife, we are from kc and i know how cold it gets here that time of yr how about up there? Is the town pretty dead up there that time of yr? We are also needing to rent snowmobiles, where is the best place to rent? and any other suggestions anyone might have for us would be appreciated. Thank you for your time.

I don%26#39;t know where to rent snowmobiles in Deadwood, although I expect they do. My sister and her husband stayed in Savoy, South Dakota at the Latchstring Inn and Restaurant on a weekend package that included two or three nights lodging and snowmobile rental. Savoy is south of Spearfish about 7 miles and south west of Deadwood about 10 - 12 miles. You%26#39;ll definitely find more nightlife and gambling in Deadwood. Have fun.

It is cold in February. In the winter the weekends will be somewhat busy and the weeknights will be somewhat slow. Presidents Day weekend is one of the busiest times because of skiers and snowmobilers but it sounds like you%26#39;ll be here before that weekend.

I would recommend a hotel near the middle of downtown to keep outside walking short. Try the Celebrity (my favorite), the Holiday Inn Express, the Mineral Palace or the Iron Horse Inn. Others are listed at deadwood.org and you%26#39;ll have to make a decision about how far you want to be from Main Street. If you see another place that you%26#39;re intersted in, post back to this thread and I%26#39;ll let you know what it%26#39;s location is like.

The Spearfish Canyon Lodge (next to the Latchstring Inn) seems to be the most popular place to rent snowmobiles. Yes, you can stay there and it%26#39;s a nice place--but it%26#39;s easier to drive back to your hotel in Deadwood after a day of snowmobiling than it is to drive back to the Lodge after a night out in Deadwood.

A word of caution about snowmobile rentals--places I%26#39;ve rented from (including Spearfish Canyon Lodge) don%26#39;t offer insurance. It%26#39;s pretty easy to ding up a sled and then you%26#39;ll have to pay to fix it. Staying on the groomed trail system is the easiest way to avoid accidents. Those nice big meadows with thousands of tracks through them are a lot of fun--until you find a log or a fence post that makes a hole in the hood and you find out you%26#39;ve owe $1000 at the end of the day for damage.

Thanks for the information we appreciate it. Was looking at deadwood dicks, is that in middle of town or on the end? is it a nice place? they have 3 beadroom suites that%26#39;s why i was looking there any info on deadwood dicks? thanks again.

Deadwood Dicks is in a pretty good location. It%26#39;s about a block off of Main Street near the Adams Museum and is very walkable from where you%26#39;ll want to go for nightlife.

I%26#39;ve stayed at Deadwood Dicks several times with mixed results. Some of the rooms have been nice, some have been kind of dumpy. Hipster travel reviewers would use the words ';funky'; or ';creaky';. It%26#39;s not a typical hotel. You%26#39;ll check in on the first floor in the middle of an antique shop. You ride an incredibly old elevator to get to some of the rooms.

Might steer clear of deadwood dicks then. thanks again for the info and your time, if you have any other recomendations or do%26#39;s and dont%26#39;s that time of yr up there that would be great, i%26#39;m the type of person that likes to know what i%26#39;m getting into before i go places. thanks again.

Deadwood Dicks certainly has character and I%26#39;d pick it over some of places I%26#39;ve stayed. There are nicer places but you could do worse.

The Saloon #10 pretty much IS the bar you go to if you%26#39;re looking for a band. There are a few other bars like the Bodega but mostly it%26#39;s a casino atmosphere. Long-time locals favorite Durty Nelly%26#39;s in the bottom of the Franklin Hotel closed when the hotel was bought by the Silverado.

All of the bars and casinos are smoking-only.

As far as food--The Deadwood Social Club (above Saloon #10) and The Deadwood Thymes Cafe (near Deadwood Dicks) are two pretty good places. Get reservations for the Social Club for sure and it%26#39;s probably not a bad idea at the Thymes.

Jake%26#39;s above the Midnight Star casino makes itself out to be a cut-above but the food isn%26#39;t really very good anymore.

If you have some spare time during the day, check out the Adams Museum or get a tour of the Adams House Museum.

One final neat little stop is the model railroad in the basement of the Wild West Winners Club. It only takes a couple of minutes when you%26#39;re walking by.

Thanks again for all the info we appreciate it.
