national/state/local park question - PLEASE HELP

About 15 years ago I was traveling w/ my family, and we stopped at a park with what seemed to be some kind of volcanic or other unusual rock covering the ground. The rock was black/gray and rough and pumice-like, if I remember properly( it WAS 15 years ago). There were wooden pathways throughout... WHAT IS THE NAME OF THIS PARK?! It has been driving me crazy trying to figure it out.

If you know, you would be doing me a GREAT service by letting me in on it.

Thanks SO much!

Jim

Was this in South Dakota? Possibly Badlands Nat Park, but I do not remember wooden pathways. That sounds like Yellowstone!

Could it be Yellowstone Nat Park in WY? Look at www.nps.gov/yell

Yeah...I%26#39;m pretty sure it wasn%26#39;t one of the big ones like yellowstone or the badlands. I could have sworn it was in SD, but it%26#39;s possible it was in Wyoming. I do remember it was a smaller, more out-of-the-way place. Maybe moon-something in the name?

FOUND IT!

';Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve';.

So much for SD or Wyo., it%26#39;s in Idaho. Guess that%26#39;s what 15 years will do to the memory! Thanks for the reply!

Cool! I%26#39;m glad you found it!

Thanks! It%26#39;s kinda hard to tell from the photos, but it%26#39;s a really neat place. Almost like an alien landscape. You hear the ground crunch under your feet and its really quiet. Cool!

On the topic...

Bear Butte near Sturgis is believed to be a volcanic formation.
